Finland Loses Car Tax Case in European Court

The Finnish government has lost a case in the European Court of Justice over its car tax policy. The state will most likely be required to reimburse consumers up to 80 million euros.
The Court agreed with the European Commission that Finland's taxation policy discriminates against individuals who bring in cars from other EU countries.
Companies that do so can deduct the sales tax from their own taxes, but private citizens cannot.
In addition to reimbursing consumers, Finland will have to rapidly re-write its taxation legislation to comply with the ruling.
